Black Phone 2 (Horror)
Some phones never stop ringing. “Black Phone 2,” the haunting sequel to Blumhouse’s critically acclaimed horror phenomenon “The Black Phone,” debuts on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD Tuesday, Dec. 23, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The film is also now available to own on Digital.
True evil transcends death and the black phone rings again as The Grabber (Ethan Hawke, “Training Day”) torments Finn (Mason Thames, “How to Train Your Dragon”) from beyond the grave by menacing his sister Gwen (Madeline McGraw, “Toy Story 4”). Haunted by horrific visions, the teens set out to stop their psychological torture only to uncover a disturbing secret as they confront a killer who has only grown more powerful in death.
Expanding on the original short story by Joe Hill (“Horns”), “Black Phone 2” continues the story of the deranged serial killer The Grabber with darker, deadlier and more terrifying scenes than ever before. The film comes home with all-new bonus content, including seven deleted scenes (“Gwen and Ernesto Talk in the Library,” “Mustang Talks to Group,” “Mando Talks About the Camp Closing,” “Mustang and Gwen Talk in the Chapel,” “Ernesto and Gwen Kiss,” “Gwen Prays” and “Ken and Barb Ask Gwen and Finn to Come Back”), a feature commentary with director/co-writer/producer Scott Derickson (“The Exorcism of Emily Rose”) and three in-depth behind-the-scenes featurettes. Viewers can get to know the actors whose creative decisions and personal connections breathed life into a wide range of characters in “Dialed In: The Cast of ‘Black Phone 2;’” discover the immense creative and technical effort it took to bring the edge-of-your seat thriller to life — including the movie’s breathtaking stunts and grotesque prosthetic work — in “A Story Carved in Ice;” and take a closer look at the frightening set of “Black Phone 2” in “Frozen in Time.”
Boogie Nights (Drama)
“Boogie Nights,” the critically acclaimed 1997 New Line Cinema film from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (“There Will be Blood”), is now available to own in 4K Ultra HD on Digital and 4K UHD Blu-ray disc from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
An epic-size story about the adult film business in the 1970s San Fernando Valley, “Boogie Nights” breaks convention and delivers sex, drugs, violence and unexpected tenderness. It is a classic backstage tale told through the rise and fall of Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg, “Ted”) and an extended family of filmmakers, who try to elevate the porn film to artistic heights.
From an original screenplay by Anderson, “Boogie Nights” was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Burt Reynolds, “Smokey and the Bandit”), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Julianne Moore, “Still Alice”) and Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Paul Thomas Anderson). Reynolds won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, and Moore also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
The 4K Digital release and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc release of “Boogie Nights” contain two new special features: the Q&As American Cinematheque Panel Night 1 with Paul Thomas Anderson and John C. Reilly (“Step Brothers”) and American Cinematheque Night 2 with Paul Thomas Anderson. Additionally, both releases contain several previously released special features, including nearly 30 minutes of additional scenes viewers can watch with or without commentary by Paul Thomas Anderson; the Michael Penn “Try” music video, available with and without commentary by Paul Thomas Anderson; and “The John C. Reilly Files: Outtakes and Extended Sequences” (“Swim Trunks,” “Waiting for Todd” and “Mixing with Nick”). Viewers can also listen to two commentary tracks on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc — one with Paul Thomas Anderson and the other with actors Don Cheadle (“Avengers: Endgame”), Heather Graham (“Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”), Luis Guzmán (“Wednesday”), William H. Macy (“Fargo”), Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, Mark Wahlberg and Melora Walters (“Dead Poets Society”).
