Howards End (Drama, Romance, Tragedy)

One of legendary production company Merchant Ivory’s undisputed masterpieces, “Howards End” is now available to own on 4K Ultra HD from Cohen Film Collection.

A saga of class relations and changing times in an Edwardian England on the brink of modernity, “Howards End” centers on liberal Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson, “Sense and Sensibility”), who along with her sister Helen (Helena Bonham Carter, “The King’s Speech”), becomes involved with two couples: wealthy, conservative industrialist Henry Wilcox (Anthony Hopkins, “The Silence of the Lambs”) and his wife Ruth (Vanessa Redgrave, “Atonement”), and the downwardly mobile working-class Leonard Bast (Samuel West, “Van Helsing”) and his mistress Jackie (Nicola Duffett, “Family Affairs”). The interwoven fates and misfortunes of these three families and the diverging trajectories of the two sisters’ lives are connected to the ownership of Howards End, the dying Ruth’s beloved country home. “Howards End” is a compelling, brilliantly acted study of one woman’s struggle to maintain her ideals and integrity in the face of Edwardian society’s conformist values.

This adaptation of E.M. Forster’s classic novel won three Academy Awards, including Emma Thompson for Best Actress. Viewers can now own a gorgeous new 4K restoration of the movie from the original negative, overseen and approved by director James Ivory (“The Remains of the Day”) and cinematographer Tony Pierce-Roberts (“A Room with a View”).

The 3-disc 4K Ultra HD with Blu-ray release of “Howards End” includes several special features, including an interview with James Ivory and Vanessa Redgrave; a Q&A with James Ivory; “Returning to ‘Howards End,’” a conversation with James Ivory and Laurence Kardish; and an audio commentary by film critics Wade Major and Lael Lowenstein. Other extras include the film’s original and 2016 re-release trailers, a 1992 behind-the-scenes featurette and the featurettes “Building Howards End,” “The Design of Howards End” and “James Ivory Remembers Ismail Merchant.” All of the bonus materials are featured on one of two Blu-ray discs, except the audio commentary track which can also be found on the 4K disc.
