Monster from the Ocean Floor (Horror, Sci-Fi)
Scanned in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative, Film Masters’ first special edition of 2025 — the cult classic “Monster from the Ocean Floor” — is now available to own on Blu-ray and DVD.
The first feature-length film produced by the iconic king of pop cinema, Roger Corman, “Monster from the Ocean Floor” was inspired by a Los Angeles Times story Corman read about a one-man submarine manufactured by Aerojet General. Corman couldn’t pay for utilizing the sub in his move, but he promised plenty of publicity — and a deal was struck.
In the 1954 film, Julie Blair (Anne Kimbell, “Port Sinister”) is an American artist vacationing at a seaside village in Mexico where rumors swirl about a man-eating creature dwelling in the cove. Steve Dunning (Stuart Wade, “Teenage Monster”) is a marine biologist doing research in the area in a one-man submarine. While Julie thinks there may be some truth to the tales, Steve is skeptical. Nonetheless, romance soon blooms. But when the mysterious death of an abalone diver (Jonathan Haze, “The Little Shop of Horrors”) and Julie’s own terrifying encounter prove that the creature exists, Steve takes to the depths in a daring underwater battle against the monstrous predator.
For his inaugural endeavor, Corman recruited first-timers Bill Danch (“Shazam!”) to write the screenplay and Wyott Ordung (“Walk the Dark Street”) to direct. Bonus features on the newly restored release include a full-length commentary by Tom Weaver with archival contributions by Corman; the new interview “Bob Baker: From Monsters to Marionettes” with author Justin Humphreys; the archival interview “Roger Corman Becoming a B-Movie Maker” with Corman about his early career; liner notes in a full-color booklet by Weaver; a gallery of stills; the film’s original 35mm theatrical trailer; and a re-cut 2024 trailer using restored footage.
