Maurice (Drama, Romance)
Newly restored in 4K from the original negative, overseen and approved by director James Ivory (“The Remains of the Day”) and cinematographer Pierre Lhomme (“Cyrano de Bergerac”), “Maurice” debuts as a three-disc 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Combo Pack Tuesday, June 30, from Cohen Media Group.
Set against the stifling conformity of pre-World War I English society, “Maurice” is a story of coming to terms with one’s sexuality and identity in the face of disapproval and misunderstanding. Maurice Hall (James Wilby, “Howards End”) and Clive Durham (Hugh Grant, “Four Weddings and a Funeral”) find themselves falling in love at Cambridge. In a time when homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment, the two must keep their feelings for one another a complete secret. After a friend is arrested and disgraced for “the unspeakable vice of the Greeks,” Clive abandons his forbidden love and marries a young woman. Maurice, however, struggles with his identity and self-confidence, seeking the help of a hypnotist to rid himself of his undeniable urges. But while staying with Clive and his shallow wife, Anne (Phoebe Nicholls, “Transformers: The Last Knight”), Maurice is seduced by the affectionate and yearning servant Alec Scudder (Rupert Graves, “Death at a Funeral”) — an event that brings about profound changes in Maurice’s life and outlook.
In addition to an audio commentary track by film critic Wade Major and Distinguished Professor of English at UCLA Joseph Bristow on the 4K disc, the 4K release of “Maurice” features a separate Blu-ray disc that’s loaded with bonus features. Viewers can watch deleted scenes and alternate takes with audio commentary by James Ivory; see the film’s original theatrical trailer as well as its 2017 re-release trailer; listen to a Q&A with Ivory and Pierre Lhomme; hear Ivory and Lhomme discuss the making of the film; listen to a “Conversation with the Filmmakers” as well as a “Conversation between James Ivory and director Tom McCarthy (‘Spotlight’);” and watch “The Story of ‘Maurice.’”
