White Christmas (Comedy, Holiday, Musical, Romance)

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, Paramount Home Entertainment celebrates the 70th anniversary of one of the most beloved Christmas movies ever made — Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” — by releasing the fan-favorite film for the first time ever on 4K Ultra HD.

Bing Crosby (“High Society”) and Danny Kaye (“The Danny Kaye Show”) star as two song-and-dance war veterans who become one of the hottest acts in show business. When they encounter a sister act (Rosemary Clooney, “Here Come the Girls,” and Vera-Ellen, “On the Town”), they’re off to Vermont for a holiday celebration unlike any other. Directed by Michael Curtiz (“Casablanca”), “White Christmas” features the timeless music and lyrics of legendary composer and songwriter Irving Berlin, whose artistry defined American popular songs for much of the 20th century.

Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” premiered on Oct. 14, 1954, and was the first film to be released in Paramount’s innovative widescreen format, VistaVision. Developed in the 1950s, VistaVision played a pivotal role in shaping the future of cinematic technology and laid the groundwork for IMAX, which also utilizes a horizontal film format. In anticipation of its 70th anniversary, the film was lovingly restored from the original VistaVision negative and looks more vibrant than ever for home viewing in 4K Ultra HD.

The limited release includes the movie on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, a second Blu-ray disc with the film — including a sing-along option and extensive legacy bonus content — as well as access to a Digital copy of the movie, packaged in a collectible slipcover based on the original theatrical poster. Extras include a commentary by Rosemary Clooney; photo galleries; a special 1954 UNICEF documentary, “Assignment Children,” featuring its first Goodwill Ambassador, Danny Kayne, with introduction by Michael Bublé; and the featurettes “Classic Holiday Moments,” “Backstage Stories from ‘White Christmas,’” “Bing Crosby: Christmas Crooner,” “Danny Kaye: Joy to the World,” “Irving Berlin’s ‘White Christmas,’” Rosemary’s Old Kentucky Home,” “‘White Christmas:’ From Page to Stage” and “‘White Christmas:’ A Look Back with Rosemary Clooney.”

Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” will also return to theaters for a special two-day celebration on Dec. 15 and 16 as part of Fathom’s Big Screen Classics. Berlin’s family will attend the evening showing of the film on Dec. 15 at the AMC Empire in New York and will take part in a post-screening Q&A, led by producer/performer/former president of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, Ted Chapin. The Q&A will explore the incredible life and career of one of America’s most prolific songwriters, celebrated for creating “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and many more classic songs.
