Teen actress Chloe Grace Moretz stars in Kimberly Peirce’s reimagined horror drama “Carrie,” now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Based on the classic Stephen King horror novel, which was previously made into a 1976 feature film starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, this version of “Carrie” stars the 16-year-old Moretz as an outcast at her school, bullied by her thoughtless classmates. Carrie’s home life isn’t much better. Her religious zealot mother (played by Julianne Moore) doesn’t do much to build the girl’s self esteem. Then, Carrie discovers she has telekinetic powers so when she faces the ultimate humiliation at the school prom, she unleashes her newfound power without mercy.

Moretz said she had seen the original film when she was 11 but didn’t go back to watch it when she landed the role in new version because she didn’t want her performance to be influenced by Spacek’s. She also had a few ideas on how to do the iconic bucket of blood scene at the prom.

“My stipulation with Kim (Peirce, the director) was that there weren’t going to be any wide-eyed looks and I wasn’t going to keep my hands anywhere in this general vicinity (she indicates her arms stiff and low at her sides),” she said. “My hands will be above my waist at all times. No crazy eyes, and if there are, they have to be different crazy eyes.”

Moore, whose character appears very plain and unglamorous throughout, recalled that she took Moretz’s mother by surprise when she arrived one day looking like her more spiffy real self to record some of DVD and Blu-ray extras.

“I was all made up and wearing regular clothes,” recalls the actress, “and she said, ‘Oh, you look so pretty!’ Then she said, ‘I didn’t mean anything.’ And I said, ‘That’s OK.’ So it was a relief to be done with the old hag stuff.”

Showcasing over an hour of heart-pounding exclusive special features, the “Carrie” Blu-ray includes behind-the-scenes featurettes, commentary from director Peirce, deleted and extended scenes, the hit “Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise” viral video and an alternate ending.
